Mideast Regional Yo-Yo Contest
Saturday, July 11, 2015 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Plymouth Community Cultural Center - 525 Farmer Street, Plymouth, Michigan, 48170 .
Sponsored by: The City of Plymouth, National Yo Yo League, The Maloney Family, and other yo-yo manufacturers and retailers.
Jake, Gail and Mike Maloney, longtime residents of the Plymouth-Canton Community, and enthusiastic supporters of children's recreational opportunities, are organizing the Mideast Regional Yo Yo Contest for the sixth year in a row. This year, appearing at the event will be current or alumni members of the elete Duncan Crew ...as well as many other internationally known celebrities of competitive yoyoing.
Yo-yoing has become a fresh entertaining activity for a whole new generation of children due to the amazing technology of the ball-bearing yo-yo. Parents have come to embrace the Yo-Yo as a healthy alternative to video games and television. Children of all ages are encouraged to compete and show their skill. There will be a sports ladder division with winners from all age groups – ages 2-102! Talented players may freestyle (one or three minutes to music) to show their best tricks and compete to win prizes. People are also invited to watch or learn these fabulous tricks. Players of all ages and ability levels from beginner to expert will enjoy the activities, learn new tricks and make new friends.
The Mideast Regional Yo-Yo contest is part of the League of Regional Yo-yo Contests and includes the following states: Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia . The winner of the single yo-yo three-minute freestyle competition will get a seed to the National Yo-yo Contest in Chico, California. See http://www.nationalyoyo.org/contest/index.htm
There will be many different styles of yo-yo play to view including:
The Traditional One Yo-yo method (yo-yo attached to the finger/string.)
Two Handed Yo-Yo Play (two yo-yos attached to the finger/string working simultaneously performing tricks)
Off-String Style (4A) – the player has a string attached to their finger only. The yo-yo is NOT ATTACHED to the string – yet the yo-yo returns to the hand.
Freehand Style (5A) – the player grabs onto a counterweight that is attached to the yo-yo – but is not attached to the player’s hand. The counterweight, string, and yo-yo are all part of these amazing tricks.
